The Standards Issue & the Academic Essay

Thursday, October 25, 2012

Students have long been in the campaign for passing coursework on time. Yet, sometimes, they do it with little regard for quality. And if they do have such regard, they content themselves to taking a shot at the average. What is wrong in this picture? The institutions’ average mark had simply become the students’ aimed top mark. Evidently, it’s the standards to which students ascribe themselves. What’s more disturbing is the increasing gap between higher education institutions’ and students’ standards. Even the presumably easy academic essay had been subjected to the said lowering standards. Students content themselves with average and that’s simply not right.

Essentially, they got in their respective educational institutions because based from their credentials and personal statements, they are qualified. This qualification meant that students can optimally fit their own standards, to that of the institutions.’ Now, this sounds like a cheat – a breach to the institutions’ admissions procedures, and to the students themselves. Perhaps, something can be done. Students can still work on improving themselves. And improvement here would mean a transition from their standards to the institutions’ standards. If they are successful, they might even exceed the institutions’ standards? – And that’s a better picture.

Accelerating for such transition, where could they start? Maybe, in writing that noble academic essay; perhaps if they succeed in something that’s presumably easy, they can move on to more difficult ones. In this transition, students should also cry for support from none other than their educational institutions. Students may ask their tutors for a workable guideline as well as consultation hours devoted for assisting students with academic essay writing. This interaction should also make room for the tutor’s improvement of their coursework design and appraisal. The transition and cooperation between educators and students is the key to truly raising standards.
